Admissions
ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
We operate very close to our 40 pupil capacity and therefore admission into Tennis Avenue School is highly selective. We seek players and families who are willing to be deeply aligned with the culture we are fostering.
Selective does not mean we are looking for finished products. We are looking for children with the right potential, attitude and support structure - and families who are open to learning with us. If a child is ambitious, coachable and ready to work, we are always willing to have an honest conversation about fit.
Acceptance is based on our assessment of three overriding factors:
- Physical Potential: The player's physical and technical attributes to reach a national-level competitive trajectory (if not already there).
- Mental Receptivity: We provide elite expertise; the player must provide elite coachability. We select players who are disciplined, respectful, and ready to work both on court and in the classroom.
- Strategic Alignment: The family dynamic is the single biggest predictor of success. We select families who are ready and willing to meet our Elite Parent standards.
FEES
We strive to be as financially accessible as possible to families that might not otherwise afford private education and/or elite level tennis training.
Our standard annual fee of £14,400 is probably the lowest in the country fully inclusive of an elite-level tennis programme, as well as being inclusive of VAT.
Higher fee tiers are also available if you wish to bolt on additional services on a fixed basis:
We are always here to help those who want to help themselves, for example older students can help with their fees by coaching or hitting with our younger academy players.
HOW TO APPLY
For most families, the best first step is to book an Immersion Day. This provides an opportunity to experience the school properly and to get a genuine feel for how the environment works. If the Immersion Day goes well, it may then be extended into a full trial, after which we would be able to confirm whether a place would be offered.
Please note that entry is subject to certain prerequisites. Children in Years 3, 4 and 5 must already be advanced players, as the school is not designed for complete beginners. Children in Years 6 and 7 must already be competing at LTA Grade 3 level or at national level.
If you have any questions, you are very welcome to contact us at admissions@tennisavenue.school. We would be delighted to assist.
THE SCIENCE OF THE 'CRITICAL WINDOW'
Our intake policy is influenced by well-established principles of long-term athlete development. Certain technical, physical and cognitive skills are easier to shape when children are younger, particularly during the years when coordination, movement patterns and motor learning are developing rapidly.
- The Technical Window: Between approximately ages 8 and 12, players are especially receptive to building efficient technique, movement habits and athletic foundations. This does not mean older players cannot improve significantly, but it does mean that earlier intervention gives us more time to build strong technical foundations before habits become harder to change.
- The Tactical Window: As children mature, we place increasing emphasis on tactical intelligence, independent decision-making, emotional regulation and the ability to solve problems under pressure.
We assess every child individually. Age matters, but it is not the only factor. Coachability, physical potential, attitude, family alignment and the child’s current stage of development all play an important role.
THREE WAY COMMITMENT
It is important to understand from the outset that acceptance into Tennis Avenue School is not a guarantee of future success. Students and families must hold the highest aspirations without ever allowing ambition to become arrogance or entitlement.
A place at Tennis Avenue School represents a three-way commitment, with each party expected to play its role fully:
- The school commits to using its expertise, experience, and proven methods to give each child the best possible opportunity to develop.
- The child commits to working hard, maintaining exemplary standards of behaviour, and responding positively to instruction.
- The parents commit to trusting the process, embodying the standards of an Elite Parent, and being the calming influence through moments of weakness, doubt, and adversity.
In our experience, when these conditions are upheld consistently over a period of two to three years, a child’s potential and likely trajectory becomes much clearer, allowing informed decisions to be made about the most appropriate next steps.
